Until now I have not blatantly ‘borrowed’ content from another site, but I read a post with the following quotes and felt that they were all relevant to the journey I’ve made to make MyFriendsHotel.com a reality. So, a big thanks to the inspirational Toxel.com for providing the backbone to this post – I hope this is ok with you!?
Toxel.com is a daily design, inspiration and technology blog dedicated to showcasing the best creative products and designs from all over the world.
Here is a, “Collection of motivational and inspirational quotes from some of the greatest thinkers, leaders and innovators of the past and present.” I have added my experiences to highlight the truth in these words, to document the struggle I’ve been through and lastly, to remind myself of the real lessons I’ve learnt.
“If at first you don’t succeed, think how many people you’ve made happy.”
- H. Duane Black
Failure was not an option – I started this when I was out of work following a knee operation in March 2008. Also, when I started there was no competition. Now, since registering the domain name four other companies have started, with similar ideas, launching in: June, August, November 2008 and February 2009. I think they would be happy to see me fail! As for the rest, they’ve seen my efforts (I had to start again from scratch in January 2009) and I think that’s won me some friends. We’re hoping that this will succeed.
“Success is a journey not a destination. The doing is usually more important than the outcome.”
- Arthur Ashe Jr
The journey has been long and yet still, after more than a year, it’s just the end of the beginning. The website will be ready next week (April 2009) and for me that has been the destination. In truth it’s more like arriving at the train station. It’s a destination and the start of a new journey. I’m now getting ready to board the train and hoping that I’ve remembered to pack everything…
“There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.”
- Colin Powell
I started planning this site in March 2008 and development began in June 2008 with an Indian company. I had no previous web experience but I thought by micro-managing the project (from London) I could get the site I wanted, at a budget I could afford. After 6 months, countless delays and over 1500 pages of feedback I had a finished site! But it was not finished to my standards. In January 2009 I had to start again, from scratch, as the code was too expensive to correct. I might show you the ‘old’ site as it is online and working…ok, maybe later. The new site has benefited from failure and so have my hopes and expectations.
“I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is to try to please everyone.”
- Bill Cosby
The advice most people have given me is to “keep it simple”. I can’t say I’ve listened 100% but I have striven to make it appear simple, clean and easy to use. There is a lot of functionality but only if you want it – I hope this is the right balance…in time there’s more to come, lots more!
“The power of imagination makes us infinite.”
- John Muir
I’m ‘always’ working on a project, an idea, an invention, a plan. How to buy a tropical island, are primordial dwarfs the salvation of humanity given the scarcity of resources, a design plan for a patentable idea… For this project I had to lean about the internet and blogging. For example, this is my first every blog – all self taught – it’s easy with a curious mind and the help of strangers. I’ve really enjoyed the creativity to explore thoughts and ideas. To wonder at the breadth and depth of the generosity out there (not least my developer Peter!) and the talent of people I find on the internet. We Humans really are an amazing bunch! If you hope we stay that way then this might interest you – I started it earlier today: The 100 Year Plan.
“Failure is only the opportunity to begin again more intelligently.”
- Henry Ford
Luckily for you I experienced that one already!
“Nothing will ever be attempted if all possible objections must first be overcome.”
- Samuel Johnson
This is the first project I’ve ever started without a financial plan. For me this depends on satisfying 1 user and getting them to tell someone else they are happy. And do that over and over again. Who’s to say where that will end? What numbers do I multiply in a financial plan? So I started – I just never thought it would be this hard or take this long.
“You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are doomed if you don’t try.”
- Beverly Sills
Caught between the devil and the deep blue sea – I’d happily settle for the beach! It’s no gamble to look back on life and say that at least you tried.
“It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.”
- Harry S. Truman
Hmmm, I’ll share the credit with you guys! Let’s make this work for us all. The more of us there are, the bigger the community, the global options and with any luck a massive group of ‘friends’. I planted this seed for us all – please help the seed to grow.
“If you care at all, you’ll get some results. If you care enough, you’ll get incredible results.”
- Jim Rohn
I care so much I can’t sleep. Last night I got to bed at 00:30 and got up at 3am! (I’m editing this at 01:30 – I got to bed as 23:00!) Ok, I know I slept a lot until I was about 32 but still – it’s aging me so fast I’m worried I’ll be dead before the site is launched!
“Every artist was first an amateur.”
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
I am an amateur – and I’m quite happy with that. I think with the internet and ideas, they’re always changing and growing so it’s not possible to really be an artist unless you’re happy to stop a moment in time. So, what I’m doing is not art, unless you look at the possible results – the eye of the beholder. I’d like this site to affect people like art, to see their world with new eyes and alter their perspective in a positive manner. Artistry of the psyche. MyFriendsHotel members reinventing their opportunities, making everyday experiences new and exciting! I guess ‘art’ lies with the consumer and not with the ‘artist’. After all, if you are not moved then what is art?
“The indispensable first step to getting the things you want out of life is this: decide what you want.”
- Ben Stein
I wanted a job with no desk, no office hours, no location, no walls and no hierarchy. The truth is I need electricity and the internet so the hierarchy of bills is still present!
“Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.”
- Michael Jordan
I’m now like an old tennis ball. In the beginning I bounced a lot. Now I just plop to the floor and think about what solved the issue last time. Once, for example, I spend over 6 hours (until 4am) trying to get my blog to work. It transpired that I’d written www.MyFriendsHotel.com with a capital M, F and H! That was it. Arghhhhh….now I’m calm, like on Monday when I deleted the whole blog database, for the second time.
“Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.”
- Herman Cain
Lucky me! )
“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”
- Thomas Edison
Let’s just hope I’ve passed that summit. The truth is this will need a lot of users to make it profitable and realistically how many users will I get each month, each week, each day? How many of them will actually pay to use the service? The maths works but there needs to be a critical mass to get the critical maths. Getting momentum will be tough and I can only hope this quote won’t have me as a statistic.
“Imagination is more important than knowledge.”
- Albert Einstein
That’s handy as I have a memory like a….er, colander?
“The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person’s determination.”
- Tommy Lasorda
This site has been funded out of my own pocket – I had to believe that was possible as I was not prepared to share the vision s I did not have friends to help. The site is mine because I really passionately believe in the good of people and look forward to bringing some of them together! Also, the strange truth is it is ‘impossible’ to build this site on the budget I’ve spent. Really, but for the kindness of strangers, I would not be here. I am determined.
“Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.”
- T. S. Elliot
Thankfully the times when my relationships have been strained during this project have passed (for now!). Really, I had everyone against me. They were looking out for me. But now they can see what I could see and it’s all good!
“The distance is nothing; it’s only the first step that is difficult.”
- Marquise du Deffand
I certainly would not have done this had I known the struggle – both in the time expended and financial and emotional strains endured. It’s been my life now, for 18 months, and so far there’s very little to show for it!
“Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.”
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
Surprisingly I still have that in spades! When I started writing this blog, I posted about how to set up a blog, as that was all I could think of to write about. “How a total newbie sets out to build a site.” I wrote a few posts and it just wasn’t me. I wrote about a few travel things and slowly, with time, I’ve allowed a bit more personality to come across. Now look at me! It was a friend of mine who encouraged me to start a Blog and for months it was pretty much ignored, but I carried on churning out a few decent articles, reviews etc. Then I had a go at Twitter which is a lot easier to manage. (That said I’ve also spent days finding the right people to follow and un-follow.) Now, however, as if by chance the two have combined and I really don’t know what I’d do without them. My writing has opened up and I have an outlet to talk to the people who matter. It’s funny how, with time, the little things add up to something bigger.
“A great pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do.”
- Walter Gagehot
I’ve had a lot of support. I’ll be happy to prove myself wrong!
“If you really want to do something, you’ll find a way; if you don’t, you’ll find an excuse.”
- Frank Banks
I guess I want not to have a normal job and a conventional lifestyle. That’s really what I’ve spent years aiming towards and it’s funny that, when it happens, it feels as though it happens by chance. I guess not.
“Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.”
- Michael Jordan
I’ve been all three of them. I’m sure I’ll be them all again, but for now, I’m getting ready to ‘enjoy’ the ride…
“Success is not permanent. The same is also true of failure.”
- Dell Crossword
My projects have always failed (well, to be fair most have never really started) and more than once I’ve said that’s it! No more!! I guess the worm had to turn. For me, getting the site launched, after all I’ve been trough, is success. The rest will be hard work and put down to a clean slate of effort and rewards.
Quote 25 is taken from the first comment on the Toxel.com post and is a fitting conclusion.
“It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation.”
- Herman Melville
I have seen lots of competitors establish themselves since I first started working on this site. The date of registering the domain name is testament to when I committed to this concept. I’ve seen other companies arrive as imitators and whilst it’s sad that they have beaten me to the punch, I take strength from this quote. My site is different, similar in principle to others but very different in practice. As such, I’m last on the pitch but I’m already ahead of the field! I’m proud to have created my own site and I will continue to chase the dream and not the competition. (Unless they overtake me…)
